Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Most commonly used in electricity grid, solar power installations and electric vehicles, a battery energy storage system (BESS) is a type of energy storage system that captures energy from renewable and non-renewable sources and stores it in rechargeable batteries for later distribution.

A battery is a storage device for direct current and when required it discharges the electrochemical energy to meet the electrical demand and reduces any imbalance between energy demand and generation.

With the rise in renewable energy sources and net zero carbon goals, BESS is an important technological advance for industry.

Advantages of BESS

BESS has a multitude of advantages when used with both renewable and non-renewable energy generation. With the unpredictability of wind and solar supplies the battery storage system is critical to ensure a steady energy flow by providing a steady supply whenever it is required whilst optimising the cost effectiveness of these generation supplies.

BESS also has the advantages

Reduce Energy Costs by storing renewable power when available and discharging it when at peak tariff times.

Positive Environmental impact when powered by renewable power.

Reducing Grid Dependency by the storing the energy it can be supply continuous energy even through extreme weather or and unstable grid supply.

Allowing Enhanced Resilience for your business in the event of a power outage.

Load Levelling & Grid Support to help balance fluctuations in the energy demand throughout the day especially in peak times.

How it works

A BESS collects energy from renewable energy sources, such as wind and or solar panels or from the electricity network and stores the energy using the battery storage technology. The batteries then discharge to release energy when necessary. This can be during peak demands, power outages, or grid balancing. In addition to the batteries, BESS requires additional components that allow the system to be connected to an electrical network all of which can be supplied, installed & commissioned by GWF Generators.
